Inspired by Nankichi Niimi’s 1930s short story, Migration de L’Arbre discovers the friendship between a certain bird and a certain tree. This fragrance contemplates the relationship between earth, animal, space, and time; serenity, loyalty, promise, and perpetuality.
A bird and a tree are very good friends. The bird sings for the tree every day. In winter, the bird flies southward, promising to sing for the tree when she returns in spring. When spring comes, the bird finds only a stump standing in the glade. The bird tries to find the tree but discovers the tree has been made into matchsticks, which have been used up to light a lantern. The bird stares at the flame in the lantern then sings, as she did for the tree. The flame dances in the lantern and as if to say, “thank you.” ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
The bird flies away with the lantern and keeps it burning. Sensing the flame, the tree starts to grow back from the stump. Many saplings sprout from the tree’s roots and begin to pullulate throughout the glade, forming a new forest.⠀⠀
After a few years, those saplings reach the bird and bring her back to the tree with their leaves. The bird passes away in the tree’s arms with a smile on her face and some beautiful memories of her friend and the forest.⠀⠀⠀⠀
Migration de L’Arbre conceptualizes the relationship between the bird and the tree, man and nature. The fragrance explores the notion of aromatic perpetuality and is a study of material degradation.
The initial sensory profile of Migration de L’Arbre features a novel, multifaceted deconstruction of wood, which can be perceived throughout the entire development of the fragrance, akin to the ghostly imprint the tree gifts in its glade – the tree’s spirit. This perpetual effect is achieved by careful study of the molecular characteristics of the key materials within Migration de L’Arbre: once a facet shows signs of migration, a closely related, albeit denser note overlaps, taking the previous materials position, creating a cyclic momentum throughout.
The sensory movement around the key theme is offset by the structural strength of the composition, which in turn produces an unorthodox linearity. Resoundingly ligneous Migration de L’Arbre displays moments of kaleidoscopic beauty and radiance; ketinetinged leaves muddle amongst plumes of iridescent animalics*, dashes of fruit and eddies of quiet flora highlight and score the vertical wood motif.
*No animal products are used in Migration de L’Arbre. Animalic sensations are created by using organic materials: seaweed absolute, cumin seeds, nigella Damascena absolute and clary sage absolute, with a complex blend of woods, resins, grasses, herbs, plants, roots and molecules produced via fermentation.
Senyokô has used fibrous notes, which mimic the physical composition of wood and roots and the nuzzling warmth of feathers – a recognition of the bird’s importance. Migration de L’Arbre permeates eternally as the sensations comprising the fond mimic the opening of the fragrance. We end where we began: clary sage blooms into osmanthus, which in turn folds under tobacco leaves as they gently ebb towards and segue into molecular ambergris – molecular ambergris being a product of clary sage. This fluctuating cycle is draped in an omnipresent veil of woods – the life cycle of this fragrance. Serenity, loyalty, promise and perpetuality are distilled in Senyokô’s Migration de L’Arbre.
